I’m doing a diagnosis presentation on migraine headaches and some websites say that migraine headaches are generally not life-threatening, and some are saying they are, but either is explaining why. Can anyone explain to me which is true and WHY if they are life-threatening [or can be if ...etc]
Thanks!

An Introduction to the Causes of Migraines

Migraines affect approximately one in six people across the country and are defined essentially as a headache that prevents you from carrying on your day-to-day life. In general, women are more susceptible to migraines. It’s also believed that migraines are genetic and may run in the family.

While the exact cause of migraines is unknown, it’s believed to start when serotonin is released into the bloodstream. But, what triggers that serotonin release? Some experts chalk it up to stress, others to poor diet and still others to everything from environmental stimulants to hormones.

BUT, he gets very “antsy”. Sometimes just cannot sit still. Might this be related to being off the Depakote? He did taper off properly.

His headaches ARE better, sorry about the question mark!
one more thing I forget…he did quit smoking 4 weeks ago also…

All drugs are dangerous. Before a person suffering with a migraine headache takes an over-the-counter medication they should be asking the question “Is the possible benefit worth the risk of taking that drug?” William Osler, M.D. once said “The person who takes medicine must recover twice; once from the disease and once from the medicine.” Sadly, this can be all too true.

The cause of migraine is unknown. The condition may result from a series of reactions in the central nervous system caused by changes in the body or in the environment. Migraines headaches are throbbing headaches that involve the brain’s blood vessels. Pain is felt when these blood vessels dilate or contract in an excessive manner. Studies have shown that the dilation and contraction of these blood vessels are influenced by a chemical in our body called serotonin. A high level of serotonin in our blood will cause our blood vessels to contract or shrink. Conversely when the level is low, it will cause our blood vessels to dilate or expand. Different individuals react differently to these dilation and expansion. Keep in mind that any migraine will be as unique as the person suffering from it and that these migraine headaches symptoms will vary from one individual to the next.

As a teenager working at Frank’s Nursery and Crafts, I would get Migraines and had to actually quit the job because of the headaches I would get. I haven’t really had any problems until I turned 24 and suddenly I started getting them again not bad about 2-3 a year, but as I get older now 29 I find them coming more frequently to the point where I am physically ill and can’t even move a finger without it hurting! I was wondering if the people who suffer from them have a particular thing that triggers them. I have been thinking about going to the Dr. but know he’ll send me to a Neurologists and I don’t want to deal with that. My girlfriend mentioned something about the fact that maybe I get them from all the neck a thoracic back problems I have as I also suffer from severe tension headaches, which actually started at the age of 24. I guess I will have to eventually see a Dr. but I was hoping to get some insight from Yahoo Answers first on what they think may cause theirs.

What causes a migraine headache? I always thought it was caused by stress…and find it pretty hard to believe kids under 9 have stress in their lives UNLESS they are abused, or live in an abusive home (i.e., seeing someone else abused).

If you suffer from frequent migraine headaches or maybe just once every few months, you know how painful and disruptive a migraine can be. You might have had to call off work early or take the entire day off from work or miss a family social event due to a migraine headache. You may have tried to take OTC drugs to help stop a migraine before it starts or reduce the pain while it was occurring with little luck maybe even going as far as getting a prescription drug from the doctor. Many prescription drugs prescribed for migraines have side effects such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, weight gain, low blood pressure, decreased sex drive and even insomnia… yet the prescriptions do little to alleviate the pain.
