Serious answers ONLY – can a small cyst in my brain cause me to have schizophrenia?
When I was a child about 7-9 yrs. old I flipped over a railing while riding a scooter and landed on my head. I suffered from migraine headaches as an adult, finally got an MRI done to find there was tiny cyst (smaller than a dime) on my brain that my doctor said was causing headaches. I want to know if the cyst can also cause me to have schizophrenia since I suffer from some things I beleive to be symptoms (talking to myself, catatonic behavior for minutes at a time, and delusions, distorted conversations, thoughts, etc). serious responses only please….
I also had a mild concussion immediately following my fall off my scooter.

I don’t know hon, from what I knew of my friend who had it, it was caused by a chemical imbalance, but you should talk to your doctor or ask to be referred to a specialist. Good luck.
where i come from, schizophrenia is when a body is occupied by more then one soul. Seek an excorsist…i am not trying to be funny either.
This is a question that only a doctor should answer for you. Go to a specialist and ask. The symptoms you are experiencing may be unrelated to the cyst, but you need to know for sure because IF the cyst causes it, maybe you can remove the cyst and lose the symptoms. If the cyst is not the reason, then you should get on some medications so that your symptoms don’t get worse. Schizophrenia is a brain disease and you can get treatment for it. Look on the internet for NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill). This is a wonderful organization that helps patients and families with brain diseases. Some can be cured, some can’t. All can be treated so you can live a happier life.

The symptoms you describe would be more related to epilepsy than schizophrenia (that is actually a very rare disease, look it up on the net). The epilepsy diagnosis would ga with the trauma to the head. Consult a neurologist ASAP. E. is a progressive disease.
I heard from an expert who works with docs dealing with it, that schizophrenia had to do with a smaller than normal brain. I’ve heard nothing about cysts causing it. Once again, your doc would have the most reliable info on this.

Yes this cyst could cause these symptoms, but do not confuse this with being diagnosed with a mental illness. You have medically induced symptoms. Depending on the location of the cyst it could be pressing against a certain audio recepter in the brain (the area in your brain that recieves sound information). Definantly go to your doctor and ask questions, and find a good Neurologist.
Most likely not. Many people have small cysts and they need no treatment unless the person is grossly symptomatic. Schizophrenia is considered a chemical imbalance and is treated as such. Though further developements in the study of mental health with regards to neural physiology other causes may be found in the future. But for now, the cyst is most likely not involved in your symptoms.

This is a question to ask your neurologist. And he/she may not even know. Unfortunately, science is still in its infancy when it comes to understanding the brain. At any rate, I would consult a psychiatrist to alleviate the psychotic symptoms and have him consult with your neurologist as well as any other health professional that you are seeing. There is not necessarily any correlation between what appears on your MRI and any behavioral or physical symptoms that you are experiencing.
