Is something about my apartment making me sick?
First off, don’t suggest I go see a doctor – I have no health insurance and no money, so that’s not an option. I am just here looking for insight and/or personal experiences of others that may help. Thanks!
I am 25 and have lived in my apartment for about 2 1/2 years. I consider myself to be in generally great health. I take care of my body, have a healthy vegetarian diet +fish. Since moving into my apartment, I started having health problems.
* bad headaches and migraines
* severely itchy skin and ugly skin rashes that don’t respond to treatments
* lethargy and fatigue even after getting 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep at night
* waking up several mornings a week completely drenched in sweat
* muscle and joint aches
* have developed allergic reactions to things such as deodorant
I really think it’s something with my apartment, but I can’t figure out what. There is no visible mold in the apartment, and it’s not damp or anything. I keep things clean, but not overly clean (ie: no anti-bacterial soaps, everythings all natural). I noticed an improvement in the frequency and severity of my headaches after I started keeping my windows wide open all the time and introducing houseplants to clean the air. I was getting migraines 5-6 days a week, now I just get mild headaches 3-4 days a week and a migraine once a month or so.
On 3 occasions in the last 8 months I have been away from the apartment for 8-10 days at a time… during which I feel like my old self! I don’t get headaches, my skin starts to improve, energy goes way up, no aches, and no night sweats.
Any ideas on what’s going on here? Thank you so much in advance! ![]()
My mattress was purchased at the same time I moved into the apartment and I keep hypo-allergenic covers on it as well as my pillows. I’m fanatical about washing bedding, clothing, linens and all are washed in natural detergents. I’ve worked hard to keep stuff clean and also reduce/elimate chemicals from my personal care and cleaning products.

i def think its mold. before i moved into my apt me and my bf were living at his grandparents old house that seriously had carpet and applicances from the 70s i hated it so much, but i always felt like you did when i was there so i went back and forth from there and my parents and i felt great when i was at my parents but then id go there and just walking in there i felt ill. well when we moved his parents started fixing itup to sell and they had tons of mold and mildew and a bad case of termites and the carpet wasd so disquisting and mass bacteria. you can still have mold even if its not visable. but i may be wrong
It sure sounds like your instincts are right, it could be something you are allergic to in the apartment, or like the other answer – mold – which is often hidden. It could also be your mattress and/or bedding – you might need to invest in a new mattress. Maybe the temp in the room is too warm, or not enough air, keeping the window open is good, or a little fan to keep the air moving. You might need to move out of the apartment. Your body is very smart (in spite of what we think) and is desperately trying to tell you something. Listen to it.

Since your mattress is new and you keep things clean, its something else that is bothering you. The fact that you felt better when you were away from home says that its something in the environment that is bothering you. You have a lot of symptoms that can be caused by many different things so its hard to say. You could be allergic to something you don’t even realize is in there, but mold is suspect except for the rash. Curious.
Using google to find some related info or you could try using answer engines such as yahoo answer or yedda.com to obtain some useful ideas.however,If you want some direct infomation,here http://www.healthinsurance-onlinetips.info/health-insurance-for-free.htm is a nice one from my experience.
I have the same issue but it’s cause is due to an old building. There is poor lighting due to a lack of windows and poor air circulation.
If you feel the air is dry then get a humidifier it not only helps with breathing but helps your skin as well. make sure you’re drinking lots of water as well.
Open your windows for a while each day to let in new air.
Try it, it does make a difference.
